Premature ejaculation is a common issue effecting many men. It is a direct result of climaxing too quickly or finishing quicker than he or his partner would like. There are many factors that can contribute to premature ejaculation, but first let’s explore how the mind and our habits with porn can cause premature ejaculation.

How do habits and porn lead to premature ejaculation?

Habits relating to porn have evolved over time with the introduction of smartphones and other technologies making porn accessible. Whilst this maybe convenient if a man finishes early during masturbation, this learned behaviour can play out during sex with their partner.

If you are masturbating and finish too quickly, even without porn, this can be detrimental. Once the behaviour is learned this can be hard to reverse. Porn is a great tool, however, can provide unrealistic expectations toward sex, a man’s body, and stamina. This expectation can feed insecurities and increase anxiety surrounding his performance, which can then lead to premature ejaculation.

Research indicates that porn amplifies a man’s feeling of not being enough. It can also hinder his perception on what is considered a ‘normal’ time to ejaculate. With some men believing that they have premature ejaculation when they do not. They may also feel the need to control, and in this process feel anxious when they are not feeling in control which can also lead to premature ejaculation.

What can you do to help?

The following techniques can help retrain the brain and reduce sensitivity to overcome premature ejaculation.

  1. Stop start method
  2. Squeeze technique
  3. Pelvic floor exercises
  4. Condoms

 Stop start method

Men who do not have premature ejaculation can identify before they climax that they are near the finish line and can adjust their rhythm to slow down the rate of climax, thus increasing stamina. Men with premature ejaculation do not have the ability to recognise climax until it’s too late, therefore having an inability to control ejaculation.

The stop start method can help a man develop better control. This is done by building up arousal through masturbation or sex to a point where he knows he will climax. Just before he does this he will stop completely until arousal has gone down, he will follow this process three times and on the fourth time he can climax. It is recommended to complete this technique three times a week, to retrain the brain and build up stamina.

Squeeze Technique

Like the stop start method, the squeeze method increases stimulation until a man reaches the 'point of no return'. Then you squeeze the top of the head of the penis until the arousal drops. Follow this method three times and on the fourth time he can climax.

Pelvic Floor Exercises

A weak pelvic floor may reduce a man’s ability to delay ejaculation. Pelvic floor exercises are designed to strengthen these muscles. The best way to perform these exercises is to follow the below steps:

  1. Find the right muscles: to identify the right muscles to use within the pelvic floor exercise, you can stop urinating mid-stream or stop yourself passing gas. When the muscles have been identified you can practice this sitting or lying down.
  2. Perfect your technique: Once you are in position, tighten the pelvic muscles for three seconds and release for three seconds, complete a few rounds a couple of times a day to strengthen the muscles. Once you feel confident you can also incorporate Kegel exercises while sitting, standing, or walking.
  3. Maintain your focus: it’s important to isolate the right muscles, and not use your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. Also, equally important to ensure you breathe through the exercises and don’t hold your breath.
  4. Repeat 3 times a day: consistency reaps the best results, completing these exercises three times a day will not only strengthen the pelvic floor but create a sustainable habit.

Condoms

Condoms generally reduce sensitivity when having sex. Some condoms have been produced with numbing agents to decrease sensitivity further and include benzocaine or lidocaine. Popular brands include Durex Performax Intense and Trojan Extended.
